Description

THE ACTION FOR HAPPINESS COURSE

Join us for a unique and inspiring 8-week course to explore what really matters for a happy and meaningful life.

About The Action for Happiness Course

The Action for Happiness course is intended for people of all backgrounds and particularly those who would like to see a more positive and caring society.

Each session has a theme, based on a 'big question', such as What really matters in life? What actually makes us happy? or How should we treat others?

The course is run over 8 sessions, which take place weekly and last 2 hours. Each follows a similar interactive format with an inspiring mix of learning and discussion.

Location and Timings

The Hackney Action for Happiness Course will take place at the New Kingshold Community Centre in Hackney on 8 Wednesday evenings from 17 Sept to 5 Nov 2014. Doors open at 18:00 and sessions will run promptly from 18:30 to 20:30 (although the first session may finish slightly later).

If you sign up for the course we ask that you please adhere to the ground rules, endeavour to attend all eight sessions and get actively involved.

Donations

This course is run by volunteers. Although there is no charge for attending, the course leader will ask for voluntary donations to contribute towards the costs of materials and refreshments (suggested £3 per session for each person).

If you choose to donate more, that will help to cover the costs for those who cannot afford the recommended donation. Any surplus donations will help support the wider work carried by Action for Happiness, which is part of the Young Foundation, Registered Charity (274345).

Course Schedule

Week 1: What really matters in life? (17 Sept)

Lots of things are important in life, but how should we decide what really matters to us? This session explores whether a greater focus on happiness and wellbeing might be better for all of us.

Week 2: What actually makes us happy? (24 Sept)

We’re told that happiness comes from having more and earning more, but is this really true? Does happiness come from our circumstances or our inner attitudes? And can we learn how to be happier?

Week 3: Can we find peace of mind? (1 Oct)

Life can be highly stressful. In this session we’ll explore how to deal effectively with life’s ups and downs and cope with adversity. And we'll look at some skills which can help us be more resilient.

Week 4: How should we treat others? (8 Oct)

Our society appears increasingly individualistic and competitive. Is this just human nature or are we naturally altruistic too? How should we behave towards others - and can we learn to be more compassionate?.

Week 5: What makes for great relationships? (15 Oct)

We're a social species and most of us know that our connections with others are vitally important. But what really affects our relationships and are there practical things we can do to enhance them?

Week 6: Can we be happier at work? (22 Oct)

Work is a huge part of our lives, but many of us find our work to be stressful and frustrating. Do happier organisations get better results? What makes us happy at work? And what can we do about it?

Week 7: Should happiness be a national priority? (29 Oct)

Is progress just about economic growth? What if national happiness was a top priority? In this session we’ll explore what a "good society" looks like and the role of the state in promoting people's wellbeing.

Week 8: How can we create a happier world? (5 Nov)

This session brings together everything we've covered during the course. It aims to inspire each of us to live in a way that contributes to a happier world, not just for ourselves but for others too.
